Isn't it pretty to think so?
[attr="class","itsover"]
Brier peered silently across the ominous channel towards the Island that was supposed to be there, but was hidden from view by the dark evening sky. Jory had mentioned it earlier, when she had first arrived in Shore Woods, but they had not talked about it since. Yet, from the way he described it, it sounded like a popular destination, even though he sounded like he didn't particularly like the idea of going there. Wondering to herself, Brier contemplated what the Island might have been like, after so many decades of seclusion from the mainland. Where the wolves any different from her? What did they eat in so small a world? How did they live knowing that the ocean surrounded them on all sides, and that they had nowhere to run if anything happened? That was not the lifestyle for her, she decided, and, if she moved on, the Island was not where she would be heading.[break][break]
Just as she was about to turn back around, a bright light caught her attention. It seemed to be a star, falling to earth, and she watched it, wide-eyed, as it flew across the night sky. Within a few seconds, however, it was gone, dipping below the horizon as it met the ground, and, suddenly, Brier stumbled back as a wave of whiteness hit her like a wall. Blinking her eyes blearily, she tried to get rid of the dancing blackness in her vision and was unprepared for the voice inside her head. But, as soon as she had her wits about her, she listened reverently without question. Even though she had not believed in a higher power prior to this moment, she could not deny that everything that had happened so far could only be the workings of a goddess.[break][break]
At the mention of a gift, Brier tilted her head as she considered the possibilities. The Goddess hadn't mentioned any guidelines or limitations, and thoughts of all the make-believe games she would play with other pups in her pack came to mind. They would, on occasion, pretend to have powers, such as being able to make fire, or control animals, or have great strength, and things like that. But, no matter what the other pups chose or changed between games, Brier had always stuck with the same power: being able to predict the future. And, she was hard pressed to alter it now, especially if there was even the possibility she could make it into a reality.[break][break]
Glancing up at the sky, she called, "Goddess, I ask for the power to see into the future and to know of what time will bring me before it happens!" Maybe then, she would finally have an answer to whether or not she should go and find another home or stay here, by Jory's side.
