I'm not a monster,
He walked and he walked and he walked. And he knew he was dreaming, for he was neither adult nor child, not fractured and scattered and flung into disarray. He was Rubedo - whole and unbroken. The fog that so often hung hazy in his mind now stretched through the forest that surrounded him. And he knew it for what it was - home of the All Mother, his kin and his superior.
And so he continued to walk, unwilling yet to summon her. Rather, he focused on the fragility of his mind, on the power he had already given away. That he might never face his brother with a maw of flames much as Winterfang flashed teeth of ice - and he knew that this decision had removed his claim as demigod, now simply a mortal usurper.
And how could he protect himself? The guard hairs along his back rippled, and Rubedo shook himself, discarding doubt much as he might disturb flies. Foolish to regret now, when he had made his decision even before he closed his eyes.
His teeth flashed in the gloom.
Were Winterfang to spill his brother's blood, Flametongue would still find triumph. For surely the All Mother had not wished her lesser gods to populate. And yet Flametongue would give away his immortality to do just that, and the blood of deities would run in his pups' veins - godblood, herculean strength.
And he would go one step further: whispering to them the secrets of their lineage, teaching them the quiet ways of summoning Chaos uponthemselves, and finally - and finally, they would come to seek their heritage and be granted it by their All Mother.
Flametongue would birth the Sun Chaser and the Gold Eyed and the World Eater - and his immortal brethren would be powerless to act against creatures neither mortal nor immortal, as decreed so long ago.
"It is my win, brother."
"All Mother, Chaos - beloved watcher, powerful beyond reckoning," Rubedo called, his call reverberating throughout the forest as he at last came to his destination. It was a small clearing, banked by fog and overlooked by trees that stretched dizzily high, their foliage dark and seemingly unbroken, blotting out the sky above. Beneath his paws, the loamy earth was peppered with dark red flowers, pops of color in a land eerily devoid of life. "I come to seek a boon, a desperate wish. I seek the ability to birth pups, for rather than death I desire to bring life." He paused, seemingly considering the words he had spoken and then added a final sentence. "I understand it is a strange request, but my mate is one you have already blessed, and he would not be so foolish as to call upon your charity a second time. So instead it is I, imploring that you grant this wish of mine."
With a deep sigh, Rubedo settled backward onto his haunches, settling down to wait. He knew of the All Mother's tempestuous nature - but he also knew her name bespoke her true nature. And was his request not perfect for a trickster such as she, who delighted in the bending of laws?
it's in my bloodline.
