One of the most beautiful things about Sharktooth Island was that it was bursting at the seams with life. Its magnificent landscape housed a multitude of creatures, hiding them behind brilliantly green leaves and sturdy brown branches. Even in the darkest nights, Iiona never felt truly alone. If she was without a companion, the cries of a mated indri pair would follow her every footstep, and the birds of paradise would sing ditties about their day. These noises were her lullabies, and hardly a night had passed where they had not rocked her to sleep.
So, it was when those noises came to a sudden halt, when she was surrounded by a stifling silence, that Iiona knew she had succeeded in her efforts.
Glancing about, she found herself both puzzled and awed by the sudden transition. The muggy forest she called home had been replaced by a much chillier, yet entirely as brilliant landscape. The trees that had sprawled lazily across the sky had been replaced by a thick fog, one she hadn't noticed until she bothered to glance upwards. Similarly, the vines and branches that had often obstructed her view had faded from sight; in their place were a multitude of bright flowers. Though their petals practically glowed and their blossoms crowded the fields, there was no residual sweetness in the air, no sign that they were really there beyond the softness of their buds underfoot. This new world was beautiful, but reminded her of the coral reef snakes that swam near the island; the more dazzling their scales, the more poisonous their venom.
Still, she could not back out now, not when she needed to succeed on her quest. Since the sudden appearance of the new goddess, of the powers she had been granted, Iiona had been struggling to control them. The process was something akin to watching a newborn pup learning to walk; though the process felt as natural as breathing, it was still difficult to stay in charge. And, while her rates of success were still varying, there was one thing Iiona was sure of: if she wanted to protect her pack, she would need to be able to do more than pull a bird of paradise from its perch. She needed more power, and the only being she could get it from was Chaos herself.
Stopping in a clearing among the spindly trees, Iiona spoke clearly into the silence. "Lady Chaos, please hear me! I have come for a favor! Show me how strengthen my powers!"
