[googlefont=Montserrat] [attr="class","god"] [attr="class","god2"] [attr="class","god3"]Bowed down to get the kings overthrown [attr="class","god4"]And I'm all alone and the fire grows [attr="class","god5"] It was a fine day for a hunt.
The previous night’s snowstorm had packed down the snow, lending stable footing to the wolves who now traveled through the White Forest. Rubedo led, as was his natural right; unlike many packs, his was one of absolute control, more akin to a cult centered about a great and powerful god than the natural family structure that was common across the land.
It was a blueprint that suited his needs – for his was a gathering of loners, the outcasts, the discarded. He fed upon their loneliness, and in turn fostered in them a sense of fulfillment. It was the stoking of a thousand smaller flames that might in time join together to create a raging sun, cradled within the coldest lands of Somerset.
But that would be later; it was always later.
He knew, that at some point, he would have to seek out still more to join his group. His number could not be bolstered organically, the way so many proper packs could be. He must entice adults, creatures with fully-formed minds, who could be tempted into his feverish grasp. There would not be puppies, nursed upon the stories of Flametongue – at least not yet.
He thought of it sometimes, when Dionysus worked beside him, breaking through snow with the ease of some great, lumbering ox.
What would their joining produce? Children, that was a certainty – but would they be fleet-footed? Would they spew flames from their mouth? Would they crush entire mountains between their jaws, would they spread the might of Flametongue through their very existence?
Would they, by their very existence, verify Rubedo’s legacy? Or would the cold of Winterfang steal the light from their eyes, the ambition from their hearts? Would they be failures, cursed curs uncaring toward their own godly blood?
He would drown them in an icy river himself, were they to betray their makers – and that precise thought was why he had not yet brought the idea forward.
In truth, he knew not what Dionysus thought of children – if he had ever considered the thought. They were in their prime, were invested with godliness, though Dionysus’ was a gift granted by Chaos.
But he would not approach the subject until he knew his own heart, knew whether he would betray them as his brother had so cruelly struck him down. Because he knew, from personal experience, how difficult it was to kill a god. And if they were of his blood, they would be very difficult to murder.
For now – for now, he breathed deep and expelled an icy breath, the fog of it curling by his cheeks before being swept back and away.
He and Dionysus traveled now on a mission, on this morning of frost and ice; the sun threatened to blind him, reflecting white off the snow underfoot. Chaos had spoken of a rogue eagle, and while he had been preoccupied of late, he now knew he must seek it out.
He had caught sight of it before – massive, dark-winged, swooping over the White Forest and casting black shadows that threatened to swallow creatures foolish enough to stray within its sight.
It was a menace – and one that must be dealt with, no matter what. It posed a threat both against the wolves themselves and the prey that called the land home.
But first they must find the creature, and it possessed the power of flight. Endless, dizzying, gravity-defying flight. It would not be an easy kill.
It would provide, Rubedo thought, a true test of their skills. And it would offer to them a chance to challenge the lengths of their partnership. Eagles, by nature, were territorial loners. However, this bird had taken it to a new level - he did not harass other birds for their prey or scavenge old kills. Instead he hunted as the aggressive predator he was, killing brashly prey larger than expected, as he was larger than ordinary, and boldly claiming this territory as his own home. Even if it meant picking fights with the wolves. It was the same this day, as he saw two trudging methodically along below. He let out a screeching cry, a cry of dominance - this was his hunting ground, his day. But they were not likely to heed, because they saw themselves as the apex predators. And so he dove, swooping, claws flashing dangerously as he passed just over the wolf in the front - a warning, before banking hard and returning with intent.
Notes: I'm rolling attacks while he's airborne. If he gets grounded it'll just be a brawl LOL

[googlefont=Montserrat] [attr="class","god"] [attr="class","god2"] [attr="class","god3"]Bowed down to get the kings overthrown [attr="class","god4"]And I'm all alone and the fire grows [attr="class","god5"] Theirs was a short journey, the conclusion reached with a startling finality. The bird undid itself with its piercing shriek, the trees themselves seeming to shake with its fury. Rubedo’s ears, finely-tuned as they were, tracked its descent, the sharp slice of air between feathers as the raptor dove down upon them.
The rush of wind toward the ground was met with flashing white fangs, as Rubedo reared back onto his hind legs, meeting the eagle’s challenge with a mouthful of teeth that slammed shut in a vice as he attempted to snatch at the bird.
He knew, even as he rose to meet its onslaught, that it was a useless endeavor – the bird was a veteran of battle, a creature molded to best conquer the heavens. If he were to bring the sky warrior down, it would be trickery, through cleverness.
But the beat of battle thrummed through his heart, his blood buzzing with an intensity that was so acute he felt as if he could trace the path of each capillary through his system.
His hackles rose, the guard hairs that were black-ticked-white bristling with a ferocity that puffed him out to almost a third larger than his original size. His muscles bunched, straining – and he dropped back to all four paws as the eagle continued its pass; his red eyes flew across his surroundings.
This was a challenge of moments, not seconds, not minutes. He analyzed the environment he was to work with: a snow-covered landscape, some trees stood steadfast as winter slowly swept across the land, others succumbing to the heart-biting frost. There was dead wood here, and his flames could alight a corpse far easily than a living body.
“Dionysus,” he barked out – the tree nearest them, its surrounding perimeter scattered with dead branches; he concentrated, even as he dropped down low, making himself a harder target to hit.
The closer to the ground he could bring the creature, the more likely Dionysus could pull it screaming from the sky.
But his attention was focused on those lifeless limbs, and only a twitch betrayed his intentions the split second before a nearby branch erupted in flames.
A bird burned more easily than a wolf, and he was willing to singe his face to a scarred, gnarled mess if it meant the defeat of his foe. AND I NEED THAT DARK IN A LITTLE MORE LIGHT The shrill shriek of an eagle split the air, echoing through the silent forest like the eerie scream of ice against rock. Though it was merely fall, an early snowstorm had descended in the night, and the air was still and quiet in its aftermath. Thus the eagle's piercing cry came, proud and confident, and Dionysus made himself ready.
When Rubedo had told him that morning of his intention to hunt an eagle Dionysus had laughed - puffed a cloud of warm breath into the cold air, even as his mate had paid him no heed and instead continued to construct the outline of their attack. But as ridiculous and unachievable as felling an eagle sounded, the temptation was immediately there - as much as a wolf could rule any land he chose to, the sky was something no four-legged creature could conquer. Only flighted creatures could hope to lay claim to the open skies above, and of those the eagle was clearly dominant. With their vicious claws and powerful hooked beaks, he was usually content to leave them well enough alone, even as they screamed mockingly overhead. But now that Rubedo had ignited that little spark of ambition in his head Dionysus was quickly warming up to the idea, letting his mate's persuasive voice lead him along like so many times before, til the bigger wolf too watered at the mouth for the avian's life-blood.
The massive bird swept into view even before its screech faded to echoes, diving boldy towards the Alpha before swerving away just out of reach as Rubedo snapped at it, his jaws instead closing on air. It rose into the sky again and Dionysus lowered himself into a crouch though his pale eyes stayed trained upon its form, waiting for it to dive again. Being flighted, it constantly had the upper hand when it came to avoiding their attacks, meaning the two wolves would have to catch it the only time it would deign to descend - when it was angling to strike them.
Shrieking boldly, the eagle soared in a wide arc as it circled back to make its next attack. Rubedo's voice sounded abruptly almost from underfoot, calling his name to alert him, and out of the corner of his eye he spied the red wolf directing his focus to a nearby tree, the ground below it strewn with dead branches cast off from the storm. He was pretty sure that he had an idea of what Rubedo intended to do, and Dionysus hung back til the last possible moment as the bird swooped in for another assault.
The sharp scent of wood violently catching fire assailed his nose just as the eagle came in to make its attack, and Dionysus leapt forward with jaws wide and fangs bared in an attempt to latch onto any part of its feathered body. He hoped that the burst of bright flame would startle the bird somewhat, and perhaps allow him to catch it off guard. But in the case that it did manage to escape his jaws, another plan was already formulating in his mind. 518 words I HOPE THIS IS AN OKAY POST HHHHH ulla

Flame burst to life as the eagle dove toward the reddish male, and he shrieked as he banked right hard - a move that took him unconsciously out of the way of the snapping jaws of the other wolf, whose attack he'd missed. Sloppy, far too sloppy. Heart rate up, the bird rose out of striking distance. Or, at least, he hoped. A fire, suddenly, in the snow? These wolves were dangerous. He should just fly away, he knew, but his pride wouldn't allow a challenge to go unanswered. Besides, while he had made the first strike, they had actively quit their movement and focused solely on him. If he left this alone, who knew when they might find him again? He had the upper hand here. Crying out again, the bird dove once more, this time toward the impertinent green-eyed male.
Notes: I swear there's only 30% chance of the attack missing, you unlucky ducks xD

[googlefont=Montserrat] [attr="class","god"] [attr="class","god2"] [attr="class","god3"]Bowed down to get the kings overthrown [attr="class","god4"]And I'm all alone and the fire grows [attr="class","god5"] Rubedo was not one for frustration – it was an ugly emotion, unneeded, unwanted. And it was too easy for him to sleep into the role of a warrior, if he gave into its rush of heat. For all that he was a fallen god of flame, he had made his prowess for trickery known from his first kindling – an oddity, in the world of gods. Forged in flame, he had been expected to be either a brutish warrior or a charming knight.
Once, he thought, he had been something of a knight; but that had been before his fall, before the wax wings affixed to his shoulders had cracked and shattered before the bitingly cold force of betrayal. Before he had fallen to earth, scorching and shrieking like a dying star.
He thought the crater might be where he had first impacted.
But that was before, and this was now – and now, frustration nipped at his hide like an overly-bold jackal, whispering that he should accept the rage, accept the hate. Accept that to win he must turn his brain off and rely entirely upon his wolfen instincts, the bloodrage that flowed through all predators when a battle was sparked. He had to act quickly.
Once more the bird dove toward them, this time seeking to scar Dionysus. There was something infuriating to the thought, some possessive hum deep in his veins that turned his blood to magma.
“Catch it!” he snarled.
He darted toward the flame he had created, now greedily chewing away at the branch it sat on. He thrust his nose down, toward the heat, toward the destruction – and snatched the untouched end between his jaws.
It was not a particularly long stick, though it sat thickly in his mouth; the flames danced furiously as they were jostled, but they had not yet devoured so much of the branch that he was in immediate danger of being burned. Instead, they were content to eat at the spindly limbs that had been stripped bare of leaves, not yet ready to march onto the main girth of it.
The flames, licking so close to his delicately-skinned muzzle, drove reason back into his brain. Rubedo set his fangs securely around the branch and spun around with it, briefly rising onto his hind legs as if he were a matador ready to confront a rushing bull – the branch jutted out from his mouth, his cape raised in defiance.
Let the bird come. He was content to wait and watch and strike; if Dionysus could grasp it now, he would thrust the flaming ends into its feathery flank. AND I NEED THAT DARK IN A LITTLE MORE LIGHT Frustratingly, the bird did startle, but not in the way Dionysus had planned. At Rubedo's burst of flame the eagle let out another piercing scream and swerved, but in the opposite direction that Dionysus had hoped for, and his jaws closed onto nothing but air with a loud, hollow clack of teeth meeting teeth. Soaring up into the air again the bird rose to safety as Dionysus fell back, forepaws landing heavily under his bulk in the packed snow. A low growl rumbled from within his chest as his lip curled, though the failure of his attack did not trouble the timber wolf too much. After all, the two land-bound beasts were challenging a creature with advantage far above them - literally. And so every effort made towards its demise was still a worthy one.
Still, there was little one could do to a bird until it was grounded, and there were not many ways to ground it besides continue what he had been doing. As the eagle circled again, Rubedo's impassioned voice cried out, and Dionysus cast his gaze over. His mate bore the end of a branch in his jaws, and at the other end of the snarled wood - beautiful flame, licking into the air like a hungry beast, crackling and blowing in the sharp fingers of the wind. In that moment, in the glory of battle with fire held in his mouth like some bold, hellish, unearthly being, Dionysus thought this was perhaps a glimpse of what Rubedo fought so hard to return to. The curl of his lip spread into half of a lopsided, appreciative smirk, and Dionysus swung his attention back to their quarry again, emboldened. He would see this feathered fiend to its deserved end, even if it took an eternity.
Clearly the eagle had a similar idea towards Dionysus as well, as it dove downward again with its deadly talons outstretched, its focus centered narrowly on him. There was no escape, and neither did he intend to run - the only way to ensure contact with the bird was to intercept it headlong as it mounted its own attack. The wolf crouched low as the eagle approached before swiftly launching himself up and forwards, rising to meet it again with fangs flashing in the sun, intent on bringing it to the ground. Whether he met with injury himself or not was unimportant to him. He could already imagine its flesh giving way between his teeth, see in his mind's eye the bird torn asunder beneath his claws, and fire. For he would allow the bird to rise once again for the last time, as smoke from its own pyre. 444 words Sorry for late ilu!! ulla
