elk hunt! It is pretty uncommon for elk to wander into the Meadow, but this singular old bull has done it nonetheless. While old, he is still obviously of sane mind. It will take more than one wolf to take this boy down.
The Protocol - Any interested in participating in the hunt will post as if being on the edge of the meadow, looking at the elk. No one may yet engage the prey. You may interact with the wolves already present (therefore, you may post more than once in this time period and there is no posting order at this point). - After two days (3/25), no others may join and the hunt will begin. - Prizes of SD and other awards will be given out after the hunt for participating. - Next set of information to come after the members of the hunt are gathered!

Inverno Hey I've done some pretty stupid things but hey I'm a little bit harder and whole lot smarter That's how I got to be this way. His main goal for the day was to plan things out. He wanted to start a life back up where he was born, to start a pack and to begin a new chapter in his life. Him and Bjorn had been traveling for quite some time and Vern had yet to express his thoughts to his dear friend. Somehow he felt Bjorn wouldn't go for it, heck maybe it was the worse idea he had come up with. He was unsure of it just yet and wanted to think it over alone for a bit to try and make up his mind. He was laying at the edge of the meadow his topaz eyes staring into space. His thoughts were a tornado within his mind taking up all his attention. Any normal wolf would be trying to make sure the area was safe and continue to monitor, but right now not him. Laying his head down his eyes stared at the green grass. To him things were quite, the light breeze moving through the meadow. It was relaxing, soothing and even eased his mind. He relaxed and let himself drift into relaxation. He was almost asleep until the breeze brought a delicious scent to his nostrils. At first it didn't register with his mind. It took a few minutes for the male to realize the large prey within the territory. Slowly lifting his head his topaz eyes. They landed on the large old bull a rare sight in this part of the lands. He watched the bull and just waited for now. There was no way he could take it alone. He would need to see if some other lone wolves showed interest.

Exasperated male moved himself along, considerate of the air around him. Travel plagued him, but his blind goals caused him to go forward. Hunger lingered around the edges and the reality plagued him. Heavens, what had it been - two weeks? A meal of worth had deserted him, and he blamed himself for the atrocity. It was his inability to hunt the larger prey on his own that he had spotted from time to time. The tracks of wolf packs confused him more than not, and he wrinkled his nose with the reminder. The last time he had cherished the comfort of too many warm bodies, it had narrowed his survival chances greatly. Disease had swept through, and what could have been done? He had fled without a backward glance, and for that he was destined to carry the guilt. The faces that he had lingered with escaped him, and his tail swished as he forced himself back to the present. Tension laced through the orange shaded wolf as he swallowed the rush of delight. The elk confused him, seeing the beast out in the open and alone. Like me, old one?
Halted in his tracks, the male simply stared in wonder, the hopeless feeling washed over him. When his senses finally cleared of the shock, his head twisted; eyes swished over the sight of the other male and the relief almost blanketed him. Fresh meat, anyone? His tail remained neutral, swayed from one side to the other as his head cocked, and the male crouched.

corelis! There was no mistaking that scent that mingled in the crisp, Autumn air, and when she found herself downwind of that tantalizing smell, it hit hard enough for a fleshy, pink tongue to trace pearl whites. Careful, silent paws brought the female close to the edge of the silent clearing, lean frame already in a crouched state. Her ears flicked just slightly, forward toward the figure that lingered in the center of the meadow. Two-toned hues slimmed ever so slightly as they swept over the elk, lingering on the crown atop his head, a testament to many long years, tracing them downward until her gaze lingered on the dark, brown of his own serene gaze. More of a lingering moment revealed him to seem to be in good health, he didn't seem plagued by any outward illness, nor did his build and frame reveal him to be any sort of scrawny tag along.
As a hunter, she wasn't unfed. Meals were picked and had carefully, but it had been a short while since she'd eaten, and she was not unfamiliar with the fact that the nights were growing colder and food would soon become much harder to come by. And it was no surprise that as her gaze found the muscled hide of the old bull, saliva hit the back of her mouth, jaws parting ever so slightly as her mind reeled, building up some sort of scene where she might actually manage to take a bite out of what would normally take a pack to bring down.
The reality of the situation stung and Corelis' lip curled slightly. No pack meant no help in bringing the bull down. A meal of that size would require a wolf for at least each of the back legs, never mind those to assist in keeping the creature scared and in the clearing— anywhere else and it would be near impossible. And then there were those antlers—
She froze, suddenly, gaze snapping to the shadows of the outskirts of the clearing. The bull's scent wasn't the only one in the air, and a few unfamiliar scents meshed with it. Other wolves, it seemed. Stepping backward, Corelis kept to her hunkered position, swift steps carrying her forward, and eventually into the company of what seemed to be two males. She stilled, shifting a silent gaze between the two, as if in silent question. If there was anything the three had in common, it was probably that soft growl in the pit of their stomachs. Ears swiveled forward as she waited for some sort of silent invitation or agreement.

Red was on the hunt, her mate just couldn't keep enough food in front of her. No matter what he brought home she gulped it down in a matter of seconds. The pups were literally sucking the life out of her and even now so soon after having given birth to them she was already starting to take on the characteristic gaunt look of a mother wolf. Tongue lashed out to lick at her maw, pulling in the last sliver of taste from her last meal. Eyes lashing the landscape in search of something moving...something alive. And then she caught it, the trail of an elk. The thought of so much meat made her mouth water.....but how on earth was she going to take down such a massive beast on her own? Her first thought was to call for Hep, but he was probably patroling the pack lands....making sure no one ventured to near to their little family. Perhaps this elk was sick or injured....which would explain why it was on its own all the way out here. With hopeful thoughts the little red vixen slithered through the trees. Almost staggering back from the strong smell of another wolf...and another...and another. Was there a pack hunting here? She stepped closer to the edge of the meadow, eyes falling on the old elk as it stood. Perhaps she would not have to take on this elk on her own after all....even if it was a pack, or lone wolves, another helping paw should be welcomed with such a massive kill. So silently she made her way through the trees towards the smell of the wolves, careful to keep herself downwind. And then the three of them came into view. Not a word was spoken among the wolves, though the distance between the three of them would suggest that they were not friends. Red raised her head a bit higher, twitching it to the side in a greeting before stepping up behind one of the males. Eyes skirting his frame before back to the elk that stood there before them all so placidly. Being bright red and easily seen she settled down into a crouch, her maw open slightly as she inhaled the scent of the massive beast. Dark eyes would flicker to the wolves surrounding her ever so often, curious about them....but more hungry than anything...

Maybe Teshi was biased in saying so, but the meadow was a great place. The flowers were an awesome shade of blue—like the sky!—and though Teshi would readily admit he was a noisy sort, even he could appreciate the peace and quiet of the field. Besides, it was always nice to visit home. The only problem was….well, it could get so boring sometimes. The quiet just meant there weren’t all that many wolves around to talk to! And yeah he had Alces—who was great and always willing to cloud watch and play chase with—but he didn’t seem to want to leave the meadow for some strange reason. And after a season hanging out in and around the meadow, Teshi was growing bored. It was seriously time for a change.
But not right now.
Jaw opening wide in a silent yawn, Teshi studied the trees from his lazy position stretched out along the ground. Zoned out and only half paying attention to the bug slowly crawling across a twig, it took a few moments for him to catch the scent the breeze brought to him. Intrigued, he pushed up to survey the land beyond his little world There was nothing. But he knew that was the scent of an elk! And oh man, how long had it been since he last tasted elk? Ages, that’s how long. He kept himself well-fed enough on rabbits and such, but it just wasn’t the same.
Without another thought, he took off after the scent. It didn’t take long to find his intended prey though—an intimidatingly large bull quietly grazing in the meadow. He slowed, crouching lower to the ground. Well….crap. There was no way he could take this thing down by himself. Where was Alces when he needed him? He huffed, the annoyed puff of air nearly silent. Maybe if he just circled around….? His (for once silent) musings were cut off when he noticed movement out of the corner of his eye. Turning, he could see the crouched form of a bright red maned wolf as well as three others beyond her intently watching the elk.
Ears perking and tail briefly wagging, Teshi felt excitement fill him once again. If this many wolves worked together, they could definitely take this old thing down! And Teshi knew for a fact that there was no pack around here, so he doubted he’d be intruding on anything by joining in on this hunt. It would be fun! He quietly moved forward until he was next to the female maned wolf, only barely remembering to keep low and out of sight of the elk. “Hey!” His voice was low, but laced with buzzing excitement and just loud enough for all present to hear. “So what’s the plan for taking this thing down?"

Bjorn Over time, he had become a shadow of sorts to the older male, always just being there. Though of course he'd occasionally stray, disappearing at odd times with no warning, only to return shortly after without any acknowledgements that he had vanished for a day. He went as he pleased, fading in and out without a care. Perhaps the word ghost would be a better word to describe himself, he thought, but that was besides the point. The point was he had just strode to stand quietly beside Inverno's dozing form, no hello or any other customary greeting, just silence. Surely Inverno was use to his unusual, slightly creepy tendencies by now.
It appeared that both of their minds were focused elsewhere, anyway. Vern was dozing off, but he may be starting to awake now, by the looks of it. And Bjorn, Bjorn was... daydreaming. He stood stiffly, giving the old bull his full attention. His orange eyes burned brightly, picking out each of the animal's movements, even the slightest of ones. It was a mean looking thing, in obvious good health with a large rack made perfectly to chase away opponents, with the added bonus of goring predators. It would take more then two wolves to take down the beast, even if they were as large as him and Vern.
He faintly acknowledged the quickly gathering wolves, as there seemed to be five in total. That would be more then enough to help talk down the elk, it was just a matter of whether or not they worked well enough together. It didn't matter too much to him if they didn't anyway, just as long as he was able to be the one to strike it down and be the first to spill its guts, he'd be a happy little wolf.
With his gaze still focused on the bull, he called quietly towards Inverno, ”Hungry?”

it begins
The wind turned, and the elk lifted his regal head at the scent of wolves, finally hitting him and revealing the predators' presence. The massive male turned to the wolves, lowering his antlers in a clear show of aggression. Perhaps running would have been a better course of action, but this male wasn't this old for no reason - he knew how to hold his own. The Protocol: Part Two - Joining of the hunt is now closed! - There is no posting order from here on out, but there are some rules: you may only post with your character once in an hour, and not twice in a row. Try to let others get posts in, but don't feel like you need to wait for days. - Just like in a regular fight, you may not powerplay. You can post with your wolf going for the elk's throat, but you may not say you connected. - The reason for the above rule is that after every post/every couple of posts, the elk will have a reaction post. Depending on where the attack is and how feisty the bull is feeling, he may dodge or negate the attack, or offer some damage up. The dodges/damage will be randomized, and are not refutable - if they jump for his haunches and it is randomized that he kicks them, the wolf cannot dodge. - Each post with the elk will include his health percentage and the damage taken/given out. - When the elk is finally taken down, award will be given out. - Happy hunting!
The elk is currently at 100% health.

A younger wolf stepped close to her and she twitched a single large ear towards him. His words rolled over her back without a response, she wasn't about to risk losing this meal to sate his curiosity. Turning back to the bull she noticed movement behind her but did not bother to turn and look. Likely it was just another wolf attracted by the prospect of a large meal. And then the wind shifted, visibly blowing her fur up and away from her skin. Right towards the massive beast all their scents would travel. And soon enough he reacted. Lowering that massive head along with an impressive set of antlers. He did not run. One one paw that was a positive in that they would not have to chase him. On the other paw the chase was what normally tired out the prey....this fellow however seemed to know better. Taking his movement as a sign Red slipped between the wolves that stood in front of her. Moving with slow deliberate steps until she was in front of the elk. Her plan was simple....and hopefully the others would catch on. She planned to divert his attention while they slipped in behind and attacked. A snarl tore from her lips as she crouched before the massive beast, ready to jump back if those antlers came towards her.

Eyes lingered, surprised that the crowd drawn would be so thick with the scent of hunger. It was a plague, the onset of winter. It meant that everyone would be craving the taste of flesh. Robin could not help but offer a hint of a grin, amused at the situation. He acknowledged each wolf with a nod - any female that caught his gaze welcomed with an additional smile. Yes, this was the life. Too bad he was the stark weak link; it was evident on the fact everyone looked better fed than he did.
Licking his lips, the male shifted faintly as the wind shifted. It was something that could be expected, and the bull turned accordingly. There was a reason that older beasts died once upon a time, and his shoulders tensed as he raised himself up minutely. His eyes rolled to the lovely looking maned wolf - fresh a mother by the hormones that lingered on her, and the wonder plagued him. Yes, she would need to be kept safe away from those annoying antlers, but on the other hand... They needed a distraction.
His tail wagged, pleased with her reasonable skills. Most females were not that reasonable, on principle, and the male shifted to slide past, going out to the left, spacing himself away from the others. Let the she-wolf play, while the others moved into a better position. They would have to be swift; damage could be done. Eyes lingered once more on the antlers, and he muttered a silent prayer.
Don't let me get stabbed like an idiot.

corelis! There was no inclination before others arrived, other than a possibly flirtatious smile sent in her direction on a males behalf (Robin), and the female's two-toned gaze flickered to the red frame of a rather willowy looking wolf as she too approached. This female was familiar to her, but not visually by any means. No, Corelis couldn't say she was terribly familiar with a wolf whom seemed to be all legs with a slender frame. She might have stared for a fraction of a second too long, trying to pinpoint why the other was familiar— her gaze shied however, when she caught notice of evidence that the female had recently been with pups, particularly the evidence displayed against her stomach, if you caught her drift. Now that her gaze had been averted, Corelis was able to focus on just the females scent— she had a scent of her own, of course, but there was a hint of milk and she carried with her the crisp scent of pine and upturned earth that reminded her of the Everbane Mountains. She paused, a flicker of dark fur and a fiery gaze flickering in her mind's eye, the final piece to the femme's scent clicking into place. Hephaestus. This was his mate, the reason he'd come to make sure she didn't get too close.
Curiosity burned for a moment, and had Corelis' instinct to hunt not overridden her big mouth, she might have bluntly asked how the birth had gone, how many pups there were, how she was feeling, if she really should be out hunting so soon, and a variety of other things that really weren't her business. But as sarcastic and sassy and nosy as the female could be, she was a hunter first. Besides, the fact that the new mother's mate wasn't at her side was probably testament enough to the fact that there was at least one pup back home requiring supervision. And it made sense that one of them would be hunting; a nursing mother needed a ridiculous amount of food.
Of course, this was all the thoughts of a matter of moments, because at the next moment there was a fifth wolf to their little rag-tag team, right beside the wolf she'd been previously inspecting. “Hey!” He was quiet enough, but he was obviously excited by the edge in his tone. “So what’s the plan for taking this thing down?" Corelis' ears swiveled forward at the moment, waiting to see if another of the wolves were going to answer him, seeing as none seemed terribly interested in taking charge. She was about to open her mouth to respond to the excitable male, but one ear flickered on her other side as her gaze danced to one of the wolves that had been there before her, a sixth wolf appearing then, or seeming to, it was almost like he'd been there the whole time— silent and it almost seemed as if he might know the wolf he chose to stand beside. Either way, it was a bit unnerving, the silence his presence carried with him.
Corelis' nose flared briefly, and her head lifted just slightly. The wind was shifting. Her gaze traced the trees overhead and then dropped to the center of attention— the elk. Muscles rippled and the fur on the back of her neck raised slowly as she crouched.
"Wind is shifting." She drawled softly, two toned hues slimming slightly. "Two to hold the Elk's attention— keep him from getting to the trees, the rest split down the middle to take the flank and sides." Two toned hues flickered with focus as she put one paw in front of the other. "Don't go for the throat until he's been brought down to his knees, lest you want a few holes in you." She added at the moment the regal would-be-meal lowered his antlers and turned toward the pseudo hunting pack. That's all a wolf needed, was to get within range where that beast could whip his head to the side and snag flesh and bone. Granted, none of them might have heard her, some might have disagreed. But the male had asked for a plan and she'd tossed it out there— it seemed the new mother had been on the same train of thought as she moved forward.
Admittedly, however, Corelis wasn't keen on the idea of the distraction being someone that multiple other lives might depend on. In fact, it made the situation urgent and the second female had to snort softly before bolting forward on her own, paws tearing into the ground swiftly as the went out left, close behind Robin, but safely putting space between herself, Robin, Red and the bull. Blue petals and green grass kicked up under her feet as she clung close to the ground. Hopefully one of the larger more intimidating brutes would assist the dame in her distractions. If two kept the attention, they could divert it between each other to prevent either one from being the sole target.
The female made of an array of grays and whites tucked close to the ground and moved around in a wide enough perimeter to face his flank, though not directly behind him as she didn't need a kick in the ribs. Waiting for the moment the bull's attention was solely directed toward Red, assuming it was given, Corelis would bound forward, adrenaline kicking and shifting with the rapid pace of her heart. Long jaws ripped open and lashed out for space of flesh that held the elk's upper thigh and connected into the socket. Should her hit land, her jaws would lock down and she'd drag her weight downward with the intention on anchoring the bull.

No one answered him immediately and Teshi mentally shrugged. Not a very talkative bunch, it seemed. Another wolf seemed to simply appear—quiet as a ghost and with no warning. It startled Teshi, intent as he was on the bull, but he managed to hide his reaction to no more than a light flinch, head craning around to catch a better view of the newcomer. He looked like he might be buddies with one of the other wolves, and Teshi offered a lopsided smile before returning his attention back to the elk.
At that moment, a soft breeze ruffled his coat before picking up to a stronger wind. Quiet words reached his ears and Teshi looked toward a female who was watching the elk just as intently as the others. He grinned when he realized she was outlining a plan, shifting his attention back to the elk but keeping an ear open for the rest of the she-wolf’s strategy.
The bull turned to face them just as her words faded and Teshi immediately hunkered closer to the ground, though the massive antlers dipping in challenge were proof they’d already been spotted. He sucked in a breath, heart beating faster as the danger this huge creature presented truly hit him. Ha, he could actually get hurt going after this guy! An excited shiver rippled across his body. Yeah, he’d be sure to keep her warning in mind. Those antlers could do some damage, and he reckoned the hooves wouldn’t be any better.
He glanced to his side as the bright red female moved forward, apparently ready to start the hunt. Immediately, one of the males and the strategizing female moved after her, though they slipped around to the left. Well then. No time like the present to jump in! He couldn’t let them have all the fun! Besides, the red wolf might need some help keeping the elk’s attention.
Swift steps took him to her side in front of the intimidating creature, though he made sure to put at least a body length between them. Low to the ground and muscles tensed, he was careful to keep himself far enough back so that he could spring to safety should the elk charge. A flash of movement from the side signaled an attack and in an attempt to keep the bull’s attention focused on him, he feinted a short lunge forward, lips curling above pale teeth, a snarl that did not at all match his lighthearted personality bursting forth. He had no intention of actually attacking the elk though and so he stopped his forward momentum almost right away, distantly hoping he was still far enough out of the elk's reach.

bull elk
Red: 6 | Robin: 4 | Corelis: 7 | Teshi | 7 The elk watched with more rage than fear as the wolves began to circle him. The first wolf snapped in front of him, and he shook his antlers angrily. His attention was drawn to the second wolf to move, and he this time he did act, charging on powerful haunches quickly enough to open a small wound on the wolf's shoulder with his powerful antlers. He had just turned back to the first wolf when pain blossomed in his hindquarters and he practically roared his rage - he bucked wildly, feeling teeth scrape bone. He finally managed to throw the wolf off, if only because the strong muscle gave way in her teeth. As she fell, he twisted, landing a solid kick to her side - enough to knock the wind out of her and bruise badly, but nothing broken. He did not even notice the fourth wolf, though it snapped at him - he was wild-eyed and enraged now, simply swinging his antlers for the moment and not making contact, trying to back them off.
The elk is currently at 85% health.
Red = unhurt, Robin = small gash on his shoulder, Corelis = kicked in the side, Teshi = unhurt
(if they did not attack, 1-5 = injured by elk, 6-10 = not injured.
if they did attack, 1-5 = attack hits + no retaliation, 6-8 = attack hits + retaliation, 9 = attack misses + no retaliation, 10 = attack misses + retaliation)

corelis! Contact. It was a relief that swelled and blossomed in the hollow of Corelis' chest, and her heart skipped a beat or two with the feeling. It was not, however, the kind of relief that had her muscles uncoiling and relaxation setting in— no, it had the opposite effect. Everything tightened all over and the second that ivory teeth tore past flesh and blood straight to the bone. Hot, wet blood coated the back of her mouth and slid down her throat, through the sweet taste was lost in the moment of urgency. She'd seen the hyperactive one take the mother's side, and there had been a swell of relief for that moment as well— high energy was good for a distraction. She'd had no time to stop and check on the male she'd flanked, though the blow didn't seem too major from what she'd managed to see from the corner of her eye.
The sound following the force of her jaws closing around muscle as she yanked her head to and fro, desperately deadening her weight to try and anchor the prey, was something she almost compared to a roar. The Elk twisted and bucked in his effort to throw her off and Corelis held fast, feeling her frame sway under the force. The movement, however, was enough to loosen her hold as teeth tore and scraped, the tattered and torn flesh slipping through her teeth as she was tossed free of her hold.
The sharp noise that escaped her throat was not one of pain but surprise as the elk's hoof connected hard with her side, sending her tumbling back into the blue petals that this meadow was endearingly named for. Using the momentum, Corelis allowed herself to roll out of range of the Elk, desperate to avoid any hooves that might still be thrashing about. Laying on her side a few yards away, the same flowers she lay among clung to her fur, little flecks of blue tangled in with her thickening white and grey coat. It wasn't until she was lying there, still, that she realized the movement and impact had resulted in her holding her breath. When she did have the sense to inhale, it stuck and clung to the inside of her throat, resulting in her jaws parting to greedily suck in more air— gradually, the sound became somewhat raspy as the female realized she was having issues releasing the pent up air in her lungs, the wind clearly knocked from her.
Clenched, two-toned wrenched open and startling blue and green hues seemed almost shocked, as she was finally able to sputter out the stuck breath, pain needling along her side now that the adrenaline and brief panic had lifted. Oh, that was going to hurt for a while. She could hear the huffing of the animal, and as her eyes rolled to the side, she could see him shaking his antlers at the two holding his attention. Her mind reeled and she clamped her bloodied maw shut with an abrupt force as the bruising flesh on her side protested the moment.
"Stubborn bastard." She growled, possibly loud enough for Robin to hear as she finally forced her way to her feet, too stubborn and too hungry now to back off from one 'little' kick to the side. She'd had worse, and the scars to prove it. There was no crack that had split the silence that came with the elk's hit, and nothing felt broken, so she was fairly confident that nothing inside was rolling around outside of it's proper place.— and even if it was, there was nothing to be done about it now. Taking a few steps back for a moment, the female took the opportunity to take note on the positions of the others, as well as a moment to catch her breath before going in for a second attempt.

Red's eyes shifted to take in the wolf that was coming to assist her before fluttering back to the elk. He was angry. Shaking his antlers with rage and striking out at those behind him. She watched as one of her companions was thrown off her feet. But was glad to see the she wolf rise again as if nothing had happened. With the elks attention seemingly on the wolves behind him she dove in, aiming a harsh bite at that tender nose of his. She could smell blood in the air where someone had made contact and the scent was maddening. Quickly she lept back from the bull, unsure if her teeth had connected with flesh or not. She snarled again and snapped at his face, spittle flying through the air like rain.
Briefly her mind wandered to her pups, wondering if it was a bad idea to put herself in a position like this one. But now was not time to rethink her decision. Focusing back on the job at hand she snarled again, louder this time. So loud that her throat ached with protest.
