JEKYLL word count: 473
The gray-brown body of the rabbit moved slowly as the small animal crawled out from under a large bush. It's little nose quivered excitedly and it reared up on it's back legs, stretching it's muscles and ears. Unable to detect any danger, the cottontail relaxed on all fours and made it's way a few feet to the right of it's home, digging in the dirt at the base of a tree. It nibbled a few blades of grass, enjoying the sun that peeked out from behind a thin cloud. The rays lit up the rabbit's fur, catching the lighter hairs and making them shine.
Inhale. Exhale. Muscles tensed, ears erect, jaws parted to drink in the scents of spring. Golden eyes squinted, paws firmly planted, not a hair on her body moved. She stayed in that upright position for a long minute, eyes flickering across the land as far as she could see, searching for something specific. A lazy smile appeared on her face then, and the wolf shot forward, stirring the air with the quick movement. Her thin legs carried her over a short distance of the land, her paws quiet and she took just a few more strides. In a quick motion, she turned to the left and opened her jaws, ready to snatch the cottontail up. The rabbit froze, bravely facing the oncoming wolf. A blade of grass stuck out of the side of it's mouth, but the animal let it fall back to the ground as it quickly turned back toward the bus it had come from. It could sense how close the predator was, feel her breath on his little tail. In the last second, when his life hung precariously between the safety of his home and the gnashing teeth of the thing hat wanted to eat him, he leaped into the bush.
She would have followed him, her muscles automatically tensing in order to jump after the rabbit, until she saw the prickly needles on the end of every branch. Not today, nope. She was not going to get stabbed with all of those thorns. Screw the rabbit. In a fit, the wolf made several irritated noises that sounded like growls mixed with sad howling. Staring after the rabbit for a few more moment, she turned on her heels and continued on her original path. She'd smelled something interesting just a little bit ago. The lone wolf had been hanging around these parts for a few days now, recovering from the harsh winter. It was just the beginning of spring, and the rabbit would have been a nice snack after living off of scrawny birds and squirrels.
She walked at a slow pace, with nowhere she actually needed to be in mind. Honestly she was just tracking the scent she'd found earlier- a male wolf.

[/b] Well, there was no hiding now and he knew it. For a minute he remained still, pretending it had not even happened, maybe they would just leave? Awan questioned himself…did he want them to leave? It could be brother…as silly as a chance that might be, it was still a chance. But, he supposed, it could also be a hungry bear, rummaging around for an easy meal after the winter, or some manner of flame-spewing reptile with a temper. ..or something even worse. It could be a woman! Awan might as well be a stump-of-a-log around any manner of female. And the prettier and more confident they were, the worse off he was. He surprised himself when he heard his own shaky voice. ”Who’s go away!” Of course that was not what he had meant to say. Awan had gotten caught in between “who’s there,” and “go away”. But it was too late now; he had already let loose his garbled words.[/font] [/ul][/ul][/ul][/ul]

If any word summed up the few months since Joker had officially taken his deceased father's position as alpha of Shore Woods, it would be 'boredom'. Joker, simply put, was not the rare sort to prefer solitude. He was a veritable social butterfly, thriving on conversation and simple interaction. In the lonely woods, he had been as sulky as a pup, already feeling the weight of responsibility that he'd been avoiding pretty much his whole life. He wanted to travel - to seek out others if they wouldn't come to him - but he was the last one that could keep this land as his father and grandfather had, and so he endured. Barely.
He'd been napping when the rain had started, and it pulled him from the light slumber. He looked skyward instinctively, and immediately regretted it as droplets stung his eyes. He stood with a grimace, shaking out his coat regardless of the fact water was continuing to land on it. He looked around, but it was the same view as yesterday, and the day before. He knew these trees, and every den and burrow and nook, like the back of his paw. He'd relieved his boredom for a short time by scouring the land until he couldn't stand it anymore. He yearned for some entertainment - he'd even welcome an unfriendly face right about now. Anything.
And it looked like today was the day to answer his prayers. It was faint, masked and dampened by the increasingly heavy rain, but it was there nonetheless - a foreign scent, traveling on the breeze. He started moving before he consciously decided to, tawny paws nearly silent over the soggy layer of decaying leaves that made up most parts of the wood's floor. His ears were perked, eyes holding a bright spark that they hadn't had for weeks. He headed toward the outer edge of the woods, where the light breeze was coming from. The chill of the rain didn't even register to him as he got closer.
Finally, he caught sight of a lone figure. It was a female, he could tell, from both the scent and her slender figure. He slowed his eager trot, but continued toward her, not a wary twitch of his muscles to be seen. Some might posture and heckle a newcomer, but Joker was used to outsiders coming through the woods since he was young. Many went through in order to reach the island, or alternatively the mainland - it was the reason he frequently checked the beach. It wasn't uncommon for an exhausted figure to wash ashore. But this wasn't such a traveler. She seemed vital as could be, and seemed to have her attention caught by something. He got close enough just in time to hear the voice ring out from between the boughs of the tree - ”Who’s go away!”
A half-laugh startled out of his throat, and he fearlessly put his face close to the opening. "That made no sense," he said cheerfully, before turning his head back to the lady nearby. "Does this one belong to you? It seems like he's trying to become one with the tree, so maybe you'd best leave him." His voice was light, but he couldn't hide his contentedness. Even if the female and whoever was hiding out decided to jump him, at least he'd gotten a few moments of simple conversation in. That was enough, after such a long drought.
NOTES THIS GOT LONGISH I've missed Joker lol

JEKYLL
maybe we're just having too much fun ♫ word count: 650
Her paws carried her slowly over the grassy path, her jaws parted slightly to continuously drink in the scent she was following. She let her mind wander for a few minutes at a time since she was in no particular hurry and didn't exactly care if she found the being the scent belonged to or not. It wasn't strong enough to convince her that it was an alpha's, but it was strong enough to lead her to believe the wolf was close. And ah, she was right. After perhaps twenty minutes of her absent minded walk, she heard something. It sounded.. like someone was sneezing. She lifted her tawny head and took in her surroundings, her eyes falling on a specific tree that had a creature huddled at it's base. It was silver and black and most certainly the owner of the scent she'd been tracking. The male wolf looked a bit frightened, and he was clearly confused. "Who's go away!" He hollered as she stepped off of the path and into the clearing. Lifting an eyebrow, Jekyll came to a stop several yard away from him and stared.
It was not the kind of 'sight seeing, sizing your opponent up' stare. It was more along the lines of 'Why did I just waste time tracking this.. thing' stare. She was not exactly thrilled with her prize. She stood there quietly, eventually relaxing to her haunches and tilting her head, finally taking in the sign in front of her after a few long moments. He was huddled by the tree, as if that was going to keep the rain that had started a little bit ago away from him. Thinking of the rain, the wolf stood up and shook her fur, spraying droplets every which way. She'd been blessed and cursed with thick fur, it kept her warm but water clung to it for hours. Flicking an ear, she decided she might as well say something while she was here. It would be awfully rude to just get up and walk away. However she was saved just in time by a newcomer that she had failed to scent sneaking up on them.
Her ears flicked in his direction, hearing a muffled laugh seconds before the new face entered the clearing. He was similar in shade to her, a mix of brown and black and other neutral colors. Taller and slightly more muscular than she was, and he carried an obvious scent: he smelled of the forest, like the trees and birds and each path was a part of him. He seemed confident but not confrontational. Almost like he was happy to see them, long lost friends. Then he spoke, and it practically confirmed her initial thoughts. His words were sarcastic but not intentionally rude, and she stifled her own snicker until the male began to speak to her.
She set her golden orange gaze on him, tail curling over her paws as she played out the words in her head. No, that wolf did not belong to her, she wouldn't willingly associate herself with someone that.. strange. Then again maybe she would. Personal entertainment. A poison wrapped comment was trying to make it's way out, but she swallowed it. What she had smelled about this new wolf that was so strong was not just the forest, but the fact that it belonged to him. Her opening sentence probably shouldn't be one to get her run off of the territory. Not just yet.
"Sadly, no. He doesn't belong to me. I found him like.. that. I'm more than happy with letting him try to become a tree. Care to sit and watch with me?"
Her voice was steady and calm, but a little tension hung in the air after she spoke. It'd been a while since she had come in contact with anyone of authority and she was trying to behave.

Awan’s heart began beating double-time when the sound of a second set of footsteps padded through the air. Had he naively wandered somewhere that he shouldn’t have? Why else would they be ganging up on him? He lay curled in as small of a ball as physically possible; on the verge of trembling. But as he and his racing heart cowered, large ears were pricked forward with intense curiosity. He wanted to disappear, but he also wanted to know who or what was out there. And now that there were two of them, both his curiosity and fear were doubled.
A friendly chuckle relaxed what was the tight-ball-o-wolf, and Awan couldn’t help but to lift his head with a questioning tilt. That laughter wasn’t maniacal or evil, it was quite friendly; even quite brotherly. And if it wasn’t for the laughter, Awan might have jumped out of his skin at the sight of the nose poking into his sanctuary of pine boughs.
“That made no sense.” The maw teased him with a cheery voice, before disappearing to address someone else.
Awan gave a timid sniff in the direction from where the nose had disappeared. But the smell of pine still smothered his nose, and he couldn’t make out any details from the scent of either two on the opposite sides of the branches.
"Does this one belong to you? It seems like he's trying to become one with the tree, so maybe you'd best leave him."
Awan decided then: he liked him. Whoever this was, his simple playful banter made the cowardly pup want to creep out and meet him. Awan crept upon his belly to a small gap between the branches and cautiously slid his salt-and peppered face out just enough to see them both. His tail swayed with a bit of excitement from behind him. He liked the sight of that Mister who teased him even more than his voice. Awan liked the different spots of color on him everywhere. He couldn’t help compare it to his own pelt, with its different shades of charcoals and grays mottled about. Even the way that he stood, tall but relaxed, comforted him.
"Sadly, no. He doesn't belong to me. I found him like.. that. I'm more than happy with letting him try to become a tree. Care to sit and watch with me?"
Awan’s ears folded back and a curve of a pout crossed his lips. It was alright if that Mister teased him…but he didn’t care much for when this, this…woman did. His black lips drew up in a small snarl directed at her, and before he could stop himself he snapped, ”I’m not going to become a tree!”
Awan’s eyes bulged and he sucked his lips into his mouth before he blurted out something else. His amber eyes shot to the ground, focusing intensely on the dirt in front of his nose. He didn’t want any trouble.
”I – I mean,” he struggled to keep his voice steady as he stammered. ”You can’t just turn into a tree, you know? And, and even if you could, and that’s what I was doing, I wouldn’t want anyone to watch me for entertainment. Not that that’s what I’m doing. That’s not what I’m doing. I’m just, I’m just – “ He would ramble for hours if no one stopped him.

The female didn't seem entirely sure, nor entirely responsive to his presence - like she was holding herself back from rasing her hackles, perhaps. Or he could be wrong. Either way, he didn't change his stance, and her words were caught up in the banter he had started, not hostile, and a half smile came to his lips. When he turned his attention back down to the wilted bough, he saw that an adolescent head had worked its way out along the ground - truly, at that moment, the kid did look part tree. He had to stop himself from laughing outright. The woman's words made the boy irritated - it was written all over his face, and he vehemently denied the theory of tree-merging, only to stumble self-consciously over his own words. Now Joker did laugh, reaching out to push the branch aside with one paw, revealing the young wolf's full form for a moment before he let it drop again. "No, I can see you're still all wolf. And it's good to know that you know it's not possible. I'd hate to have to break your heart."
He stepped back so he could look at the both of them. "My name is Joker. I watch over these lands, and you're welcome to stay as long as you'd like." It was the responsible part of him that said the words, then the ever-mischievous glint came back to his eye. "I'd hate to have to call you Treeling and Hey You, if you're going to be traipsing about. What are your names?"
NOTES Guess who's late always. It's me. Sorry D:
