Autumn and winter had finally passed. Oh, the winter, so brutal yet so beautiful. It would rip through his coat and leave him floundering for warmth in the night. Spring was a welcome exchange, the warmer and wetter weather leading to different, but more tolerable issues.
Yet, for some reason, he found himself here at the lake. He inhaled deeply all the scents of spring. Hints of new life were everywhere and a chorus of birds was trickling through the air. A pleasant sound. He could scent prey nearby, but the urge to hunt was not upon him.
It was hotter here than he was accustomed to. There were more bugs too, he realized, as he swiped a fly from his face. Surely fleas and ticks would also follow. The winter usually killed them off, but spring brought them back with a vengeance. He hadn't been here long though and was free from their terror.
Gradually the large white male continued on, paws gently crushing the undergrowth. It was a beautiful morning to be out and about.
All at once he paused and sniffed heartily. Someone had scented nearby. He wandered closer and studied the scent carefully. A friend came to mind. One he hadn't seen in a very long time. He waved his tail hopefully. Perhaps she lived her, as her marks claimed. It turned out that he was on the edge of her border near the lake.
He tossed up his head and gave a deep, rumbling howl that reverberated through the trees like many ghosts echoing his call.

Senka
In all honesty the female couldn't tell you why she decided such a warm environment, infested with bugs and uncomfortable until her coat properly shed. She knew why she had left White forest for the internal scar she had last received was still fresh across her heart and within her mind. She couldn't return not as long as that pack was still established and that he who won't be spoken of was still there. She could only hope that her family may fallow her, be willing to make the change and not join the reason she had left.
Sighing quietly the lounged by the edge of the water, relaxing for the time being. She was a bit disappointed that her family hadn't come yet, none of them had joined her. She wouldn't dwell on it though, this had been her choice, not theirs. She stared at her scarred reflection in the water just thinking on the plans she had for these lands and what kind of legacy she wanted to make. She knew little of the packs from the south, east, and west so she knew little of their reputations. When built up she would definitely want to make allies with other packs, but that was a long ways from present time.
Soon a deep rumbling howl broke her from her thoughts making her ice blue eyes look away from the lake. She stood and shook out her fur before turning herself in the direction of the howl, before striding forward with ease. It was so nice that she didn't have to trudge through deep snow here. It took her a bit to even get close to the area the howl came from. Pushing through the brush on the forest floor she came to the small clearing where he stood. She mentally prepared herself for the interaction, that was until she looked up.
Her ice blues met his and it was instant recognition, how could she forget him. Her tail wagged and a small smile spread across her face.
"Byel what brings you down from the cold," she asked, her day just got better now that an old friend had arrived.

He heard and scented her approach before she was too near and excitement tingled throughout his body. He hadn't seen a familiar face in some time, least of all a friendly one. Byelobog wasn't sure where they stood currently, but clearly she was pleased to see him.
"I've been 'down from the cold' for a while, now," he replied, coming over to bump his nose against hers in greeting. "Mm... didn't expect to find you here, Senka. You look well." She had more scars than he recalled, but he didn't comment on it. Any scar was a worthy one, and they only showed the test of time and strength.
It had been so long, he couldn't quite fathom the amount of time that had passed. The last time he'd seen her she'd been avoiding the fact that her parents had prearranged her future mate for her. She seemed to be alone here, her marks were solitary and no one had followed her to greet him. Their packs had been allies for as long as he could remember. Now he had no idea if they were even still there.
"Is it just you here?" the curiosity rang in his voice. Would she remember his curious nature, and that he had never been able to lie? Well, never able to lie to her at any rate. He'd just never been able to bring himself to do it nor was there ever any reason to. | |
