Well, Wolf was definitely still alive. The growling and grumbling and half-jumbled sentences that she could make out where definitely the product of his tongue and crooked mind. She waited impatiently for his head to surface, her features scrunching in concern when the snow started caving in on the hole she had made. "Oh Wolf, you are a right menace sometimes" she groused. If she managed to make a hole for him to escape, it would only make sense for him to block the tunnel with his frantic flailing and scrabbling. Huffing at the indignation of putting her already tired muscles back to work, she proceeded digging away the snow that Wolf insisted on showering himself with.
No matter how much she dug, new snow kept resurfacing and she surmised that Wolf was digging in the wrong direction. She groaned audibly, despairing at the headlessness that her charge displayed. Really, this wasn't helping anyone. Plus time was running out for him - there was only so much oxygen down there, and his squeaking and wailing was using that store up at an alarming rate. "WOLFRAM" she snarled, her angry voice cutting easily through the storm. She hardly ever used his given name - why, it was was cruelty of the parents to call him something so harsh and old-fashioned - but when she did, it meant he had better pay attention. "If you move one muscle, I swear I will hang you up by the ears! " There was cold steel to her vocals that indicated that she would go through with her threats. She wasn't about to go soft on him simply because he thought differently to the rest. Losing your head in moments of danger was a stupid and senseless thing to do, and she'd be damned if he didn't learn the lesson.
With her anger and frustration properly vented, she continued digging. Either Wolf had heard her and was finally sensible enough to follow direct orders, or he was unconscious. She prepared herself for the latter, her paws shovelling snow as swiftly as her limbs would allow. Bit by bit the hole deepened, and finally she caught sigh of the tip of something brown and furry. His tail! She dug a little more, freeing enough of the tail so she could give it a firm yank. ""I've got you Wolf. Don't you dare start struggling again!"" The last thing she needed was for him to start thrashing in her grip. She slithered cautiously into the hole she had created, pawing at the snow that covered her charge from sight. It was slow business, but finally she managed to free most of him from the sticky whiteness. She grabbed him unceremoniously by the scruff of his neck and pulled him sharply upwards so he was facing in the right direction. "Now you are going to follow me out, is that understood?" One blue eye was cast sternly on the snow-speckled younger wolf, her tone brooking no argument. He could stammer and whine and complain after they were on firm ground again.

Wolf
Wolf knew he was in trouble, his panic was blinding him but at the same time the female seemed to have disappeared. The fact that the snow had sucked her up was not something he expected to happen so quickly, and the whimpering just continued on. He was a blathering idiot when he wanted to be, there was never a reason in the world for that to be doubted. While Zaphy had been doing so well teaching him on how to survive, the fact of the matter was when things got tough - Wolf went and had his meltdowns.
The scolding was enough to snap him out of it though, the threat was enough to make him freeze… with his face buried in the snow. Nope, he was not going to move. He valued his ears and had no intention in the world of being manipulated and turned into a bunny rabbit. Heavens KNEW that was what was going to happen when Zaphy went through with her threat.
So until she was going to have him well suited, he showed that at least he knew how to obey. It was something that could be tolerated, and the movement was coming bluntly in the direction that his hope was lingering. At least that was something that was enough to cause burning through his system. But what if the snow fell on them and ate them alive while he was trying to get out with her? There was just too many risks, perhaps it was easier for him to just sit down and die.
But eventually he crawled out, following along with her into the light. His head was shaking with a feeling of disbelief, but he was still too afraid to say anything. Somehow Zaphy had made him be able to get out of the dark hole that was coming to eat him alive. Definitely not something he had expected so quickly, but Zaphy was forever incredible. Crawling, being half drug, it was not the handling that he was totally accustomed to. Whatever helped him not get eaten alive by hungry snowflakes, well. That would do.

She sighed with relief when she and Wolf made it out into the safety of the heavily falling snow. She felt a flicker of guilt at the worried glint to his eyes, the firmly clamped jaws that made sure he didn't do or say anything that would incite her fury. "There, we're all safe now" she muttered, leaning forwards to wash his face with eager strokes of her tongue. Goodness was she glad that they had gotten out of that in one piece. Snow was a fickle thing, pretty as it was. One moment it could be firm as a rock beneath your paws, the next it'd be burying you alive. "But you really mustn't lose your head in dangerous situations, love. That is what will get you killed." She drew back a little, concerned gaze resting on the smaller wolf. She would be devastated if something happened to her little darling. She'd never really longed for pups of her own - she was too flighty to want to stick around in one place of days on end - but Wolf was as close to her child as one could get. She laughed with him, and cried with him; looked after him when he was in a good mood or when he was sick and shivering.
She moved forwards, nose pushing him until he was resting snugly against her chest. She sent a wordless thank you to the fates for getting them out of their predicament, nuzzling the creature that was resting against her. Her world would have gone through a dark spell indeed if he had been torn from her grasp this night. "Still, it's over and done with now and there's not use crying over spilt milk." She ran her tongue across his brow and cheeks, inhaling his familiar scent and generally making sure that he was unharmed. It was bound to be another traumatic experience for him - the least she could do was be with him whilst he worked through the matter and calmed his racing heart.

Wolf
Paws felt up the snow as he emerged from the cowering hole, and his head was aching in a way that could not be described. Freaking out, dancing around and going crazy was not what he wanted to deal with. The shake of his head was fierce, and the look in his eyes was something lost. He had no clue what to do with himself once he was freed from the confinements of his hell.
Tail swished from one side to the other, and mouth curled up and she show was sharp and pointed. The rage was gentle in his eyes, but it was a show that he most certainly did not appreciate the snow for its fun and games. “Murderous vultures!” His snarl was light hearted as he glared at the snowflakes, “Not even a carnivore taste and still you consume the intentions of the ill!” His cry was rampant, and his paws stomped murderously on the snow flakes.
His gaze turned to the concerned looking female, and he offered the dry look that she deserved. Panicking was not a good thing in a situation like that? “Better to suffer the thrill of death by the cold than death by the fire, is it! Glory behold I would rather burn.” His strict words were a denial, and he admitted it had not all been so bad. Mouth turned down for a few long moments, and the exhale was soft.
“Seasons greetings,” Cool words murmured as she checked him over, and his legs shook with the fear that was still holding onto him. But still, with the crumbling of the snow lightly behind them, the male jerked forward like a startled deer. Pouncing into the air, the slight yelp was out of his lips. When was spring coming? When was it going to be spring time?

She grinned when Wolf found his tongue again. It was a sure sign that he had gotten over his fright and, more importantly as far as she was concerned, had realised that his scolding was over. There were times when she was not to be messed with...and it was always refreshing to know that Wolf managed to distinguish between the times where she demanded complete obedience, and the times where things were at ease. "Oh yes, you're quite right" she agreed, giving the snow a dirty look. "There is absolutely no sense in trying to suffocate us, when you can't derive any use from our bodies." Really, if there time had come, then they could just as well fall asleep and not wake up. That would be much preferable to having the oxygen squeezed from your lungs.
Her inner turmoil was slightly mollified at the marginally apologetic look on the male's features. At least he knew he wasn't supposed to panic. It was just a matter of getting him to use his knowledge rather than his fear during unexpected happenstances. "You'd certainly be a goner faster if you burnt to a crisp" she informed him, pulling away from him to give him one last check over. "The cold would give you more time to find a way out of your predicament though." But, if it came down to it, she preferred a life without too many big adventures. Big adventures were hard work on her heart and nerves...and though she wasn't yet an old crone, she was definitely feeling older than she used to.
As the male started forwards, she set off into motion alongside him, her gait slow to accommodate his. The snow was thankfully easing up a little, the wind no longer howling like a set of whirling dervishes. Instead, it tugged a little uncouthly at her brown and grey coat, like a petulant child asking for forgiveness. Not that she would bestow it just yet - no-one scared her little baby and was simply absolved of all guilt. She simply didn't work that way. "Do you want to be heading home, sweetheart? Or does your restless spirit crave walking the snow-laden expanses of my home lands?" She turned to look at him, quite open to whatever he wished to do. She was more than content to simply wander along with him and keep him from more night-time terrors

Wolf
Gentle chiding from the lovely she wolf was something he could put up with on a daily basis through simple conversation. It was most certainly the fear of moments like just passed, when she would become fierce. It was hard on the little wolf, sometimes he was slower at the common concepts than others. It was not that he was stupid, per se, but the development of his mind had never quite met the standards that it would have been expected. No wonder his parents had abandoned him as they had, survival of the fittest was sometimes the only choice.
Did he want to continue on this horrible adventure though? He found himself moving alongside the female he counted on for so much in his life, and his eyes rolled to the female beside him. "Burning is not always such a trouble on the heart." Words were thoughtful on the matter, "Best to have the white dove sing than to prance along the edge of hope." That was his argument on most things, if it was going to happen - just get it over with. He would handle the matter from that point on.
So on the matter of going to rest in home, the issue was not to be looked at too closely. The half smile on his features was evident enough, and his head bobbed. "Best join the dead in their slumbers," His amused tone was not to be mistaken with the dread of his words, "Blind to the world as the womb that produced a flickering soul." His parents had been both blind, or so he had thought; the feeling came from the fact they had chosen the caverns for their home.
More bat like, really. It was no wonder he liked chasing after moths so much, it must have been a staple food source in the caves. But from what he could remember of those early months, everything was always just a black painted image. No warm, no life. Just darkness.

She shook her head lightly at the riddled words he murmured. He really was one of a kind. She grinned fondly at him, leaning forwards to nuzzle his cheek gently as they moved slowly on. "You'd do well to follow that white dove on her travels" she added. "Her song might keep you in more peaceful waters, where perils don't snag you like a brambles unruly thorns." Heavens knew Wolf needed some inner peace to guide him on his wanderings. It was hardly surprising really, that one so restless would attract trouble like honey attracted bears. He was a walking disaster, really. His thoughts everywhere and nowhere - just waiting to be plunged into the next mishap. She sighed gently to herself. Some days she worried that he would never find that kernel of inner self-worth that brought peace to the mind, and peace to the soul.
She smiled in mild relief as he took the sensible option. "Wise decision, my little bee" she informed him fondly, sapphire orbs glittering with approval. With all the stress of the past half hour, sleep was the best remedy. For him and for her. As much as others would say you missed half the world whilst you slept, she thought that was utter nonsense. Just because she gave her body rest, didn't mean her soul was bound to her body. No, it could soar far and wide - interacting with creatures she had never met before, or visiting old friends. It was when she slept that she could experience the whole beauty of life. So many places she could go without tiring her body, so many things to see from so many different angles. No, sleep was a wonderful thing indeed.
"One day you'll learn to let your spirit roam far and wide whilst you sleep" she spoke softly, shepherding the male through the snow drifts in the direction of the thick brambles she had grown up in. It was still a little trek to reach them, but they'd be safe and snug within those knotted, thorny branches. "There are times where I feel more alive in my dreams than I have ever felt when walking across the land. Times when all the little networks of life becoming momentarily visible - each little thread on fate's loom sparkling iridescently for a second." She sighed gently, a smile of utter contentment sweeping across her features. "Once you know who you are, your soul can go on travels far across the world. It can show you places that you should once see, or faces you should avoid. Just because the body is deaf and blind does not mean that the world is not filled with sound and visions."
