She could almost taste the smugness in his voice as Kerberos stepped over her murdered predecessor. She could understand the emotion on his behalf, really. For all these weeks it had been a constant battle of wills; a battle between conscience and the lack of conscience. As much as she wished otherwise, now was the time to admit defeat. She had done all she could...and if her best was not enough, then why should she bother subjecting herself to the futility of her toils? Perhaps she had a moral obligation, but for now she was just too weary.
Her ears pricked at his words, down-cast gaze lifting to look into that single ocean-coloured eye. Cheer up, indeed! She sighed softly, carefully sweeping together the shattered remnants of her heart. TIme would heal things, they said. She just hoped there wouldn't be too much scarring. "At least you're deriving some amusement from this" she offered dryly, turning her gaze away from the corpse. The idea that she could end up like that made her feel queasy. "I hope you feel proud of your achievement" she continued, holding herself still when he stood over her. "Is a broken heart for a broken heart payment enough?" Perhaps it wasn't...perhaps his poorly understood grief would go on seeking vengeance until his dying breath was drawn.
She bristled at his callous remark, her gaze narrowing as she tipped her head up to look at him, "I brought this upon myself?" There was a definite note of incredulity to her tunes. "Just because I think honour and compassion should be embraced by all creatures of the world?" She barked a sharp laugh, making it quite clear what she thought of his idiotic asssessment. No, she'd ended up here simply because Kerberos didn't like adversity...and it made him feel better if she could put her in her place.
She froze as his jaws fastened lightly on her nape, a touch that was almost tender for the male. She grumbled softly under her breath. How could he do this to her? Switch from the monster to the creature who could offer so much if he only wanted to. For a long moment she held herself stiffly, trying to deny the caress at her neck. Then she let the tension go, her shoulders dropping and her head sinking a little. Perhaps she should just take the good moments when they came - and keep her head down when he was on the rampage.
