HALCYON vanatore we're just resurrection men Despite his initial feelings of apathy toward the island that partially stemmed from his less-than-pleasant journey across the channel, Halcyon had to admit that the beach at night was in fact quite beautiful. He was situated a few lengths away from the shore in between a rocky outcrop and a large hulking tree's worth of driftwood, which formed a secluded cove of sorts. Laying comfortably on the sand that was still warm from an entire day's worth of sun, he watched the moonlight glint and glitter exuberantly off the crests of little waves as if they were stars fallen from the sky. Then, as he continued to lounge in something almost akin to contentment, something really did fall out of the sky. Its descent was incredibly swift, bringing with it a white light that increased exponentially in intensity as it approached the earth. His eyes narrowed in suspicion as the meteor (for what else could it be?) grew ever closer, hackles rising unconsciously as he rose to his feet, not knowing if he should run or brace for impact. But when the comet was about to hit the earth - it didn't. Instead the white light washed outward as far as the eye could see like a massive wave, and Halcyon squeezed his eyes shut, turning his head away from the blast. When the whiteness subsided, it was as if nothing had happened for all of about five seconds. Then a strange voice spoke, though somehow Halcyon immediately knew the sound was not being heard through his ears, but passing directly into his mind. No mortal being could do such a thing, of course. With a serene sense of understanding he allowed his earlier apprehension to seep away. It wasn't often (in fact, not in at all in his lifetime) that deities deigned it worthwhile to approach again the mortals that they had distanced themselves from, all those eons ago. She (for it was a goddess who spoke, who named herself Chaos) extended the offer of power granted by her immortal paw, and at this the corner of Halcyon's lips turned up in a bit of a sardonic smirk. Oh, but he wanted nothing. He wanted to be nothing. If he had exactly his way, he would be content to disappear, to recede into the background, to never have been there. Of course. He did want something, after all, curse this mortal body and its desires. To be invisible, or at least to become unnoticed? To hide in plain sight, have other wolves walk right past him and not have the least inkling of knowledge that they shared their space with another living, breathing creature? How did one even put into concise words such a desire? Anyhow, one did not just pass on the opportunity to parlay with gods. "I wish to become unseen," he tried, wondering if the goddess Chaos could detect his own thoughts in a similar way to how she had placed her words into his mind. "If the mighty goddess sees fit to deem it so." Extraneous words did not come freely to Halcyon, but deities did deserve the respect they commanded, if only to ensure one was not immediately smote to the ground. |
