getting a hibiscus flower for Chaos!

Iiona had always felt like night and day on Sharktooth Island were two sides of the same coin. In the sunlight, the island brimmed with life. Birdsongs harmonized with the howls of lemurs in the trees, crocodiles roared out a bassline, and the ocean rose and fell and in steady four-count. Every living creature seemed to be fighting for attention, elbowing and shoving one another to claw their way into the limelight. It was a constant battle, and one could never truly ignore the noises, even as they faded into the background.
As the sun set, however, everything seemed to slow down. Animals would drift off to sleep, taking their guttural cries with them, and a silence would fall over the island. But, the quiet was neither suffocating nor overwhelming. It was nice, soothing, like the comfortable weight of a mother’s paw as she tucked her pup closer to her chest. The breeze rustled the leaves in a midnight sonata, playing encore after encore as crickets chirped their approval.
It was rare that Iiona had the chance to enjoy the peace. Usually, she would be out like a light as soon as she assigned the guards for the evening and dawn shifts. The pressures that came with being an alpha were not insignificant and her duties left her sleeping like a rock until morning came and she would repeat the cycle all over again. She had felt that exhaustion as she climbed Lovers’ Peak; her concrete paws dragged through the dirt and her shoulders ached under a phantom weight. But, she had managed to power through, and she was grateful that she had. Because, here, on the tallest point on the island and under the soft glow of the full moon, the world had never looked so beautiful.
The island was awash with a hoary tint, and seemed almost ethereal in its image. Taking a deep breath of the crisp air, Iiona stood still, staring out wistfully into the night. Sometimes, when her walls came down and she allowed herself the briefest moments of weakness, of selfishness, she admitted that she preferred the darkness. Not out loud, never out loud, for that would give the wish too much sway, would allow it to infect her mind until she was no longer able to ignore it. But, quietly, in the deep recesses of her heart, she knew that she preferred the night. For, in the darkness with no one around, she wasn’t the alpha of Sharktooth Island. She wasn’t a Faure with a name to uphold. Here, in the center of Rannock’s midnight paws, she was just Iiona, and she was responsible for no one but herself. It was liberating, and the freedom soothed her sore paws and made her head spin with giddiness.
If the night lasted forever, she could leave here. She could go off and explore the world like so many of her peers. She could carve a name for herself, experience all the possibilities she would never encounter here. Closing her eyes tightly, Iiona saw the black and white zigzags of Everbane Mountain paint themselves against the back of her eyelids. Next to them was a beautiful meadow filled with dainty blue flowers, a crystal clear lake that rippled in the wind – she brought all of her father’s stories to life with ease. Then, she adventured through them, felt the cold sting of snow under her feet and smelled the sweetness of the bluebells in the air, swam in the cool water and dried off on the shore. The entire time, her heart soared with exhilaration, excitement shaking her to her core as she melted away, felt her body disappear until there was nothing left, until there was nothing tying her to this fate.
Then, a bird’s angry chattering startled her and trapped her back in her heavy pelt, locked away behind glassy eyes. A familiar warmth sunk into her fur, and the world traded its silver dress for a golden coat. Dawn was upon her, and with it came the harsh reminder that dreams could not follow her out of their realm. The night was gone, and with it went the liberation it offered. Once more, Iiona was engulfed by her mantle, and, as she dipped her head in silent resignation as she – the perfect daughter, the perfect heir – had been taught to do. The time for hoping was over. Reality was upon her once more.
Gently, Iiona padded over to one of the scarce patches of grass that were scattered around the peak. Observing it closely, she sighed as she found her prize: a freshly bloomed hibiscus flower, just as Chaos had requested. Leaning over, she grasped it between sharp teeth and plucked it from the earth, taking great pains to ensure that she did not damage the delicate petals. Then, with the blossom secured gingerly between her jaws, she cast one last look over the island, gaze lingering over the thin strip of land that traced the horizon, before turning and racing down the mountain, fearful of what might have happened if she had stayed even a second longer.
